title: "Augure vs Amazon Bedrock in Canada: where inference actually runs"
description: "For Canadian teams comparing Amazon Bedrock in ca-central-1 with Augure: which models stay in-Region, where cross-Region inference goes, and a boto3 migration."
competitor: "Amazon Bedrock in Canada (Central)"
vendor: "AWS"
category: "cloud"
canonical: "https://augureai.ca/compare/aws-bedrock"
updated: "2026-10-27"
summary: "Amazon Bedrock has a Canada (Central) Region, but as of October 2026 its current Claude, GPT and Nova models are served there only through cross-Region inference profiles whose destinations include US Regions; Augure stores customer data in Canada, runs inference on Canadian infrastructure and vetted EU partners, never US providers, and bills in CAD."
faqs:
  - q: "Can I run Claude on Amazon Bedrock entirely inside Canada?"
    a: "Not with current Claude models, per AWS documentation checked 2026-10-27. In ca-central-1, Claude 4.x and 5.x models show In-Region as not supported and are available only through Geo or Global cross-Region inference. The US geographic profile called from ca-central-1 lists ca-central-1, us-east-1, us-east-2 and us-west-2 as destination Regions. Only older or smaller models such as Claude 3 Haiku, Llama 3, Mistral Large and the embedding models are In-Region."
  - q: "Does Amazon Bedrock store or train on my prompts?"
    a: "AWS states that inputs and outputs are not used to train models and are not shared with model providers, and that model providers have no access to prompts. Retention depends on the model and your data retention mode: Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 require the aws_review mode, under which prompts and completions are retained for up to 30 days in the Region that processed the request."
  - q: "How hard is it to move from boto3 converse to Augure?"
    a: "The call shape changes from Bedrock's converse API to OpenAI-style chat completions: messages become role and content strings, inferenceConfig becomes top-level parameters, and the response text is at choices[0].message.content. Any OpenAI-compatible SDK works against https://api.augureai.ca/v1 with an Augure key."

# Augure vs Amazon Bedrock in Canada: where inference actually runs

Amazon Bedrock is AWS's managed service for foundation models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Amazon, Meta, Mistral, Cohere and others, with endpoints in the Canada (Central) Region, ca-central-1. It fits teams whose data, IAM and networking already live in AWS. Augure is a Canadian AI platform and OpenAI-compatible API for regulated Canadian organisations, with customer data stored in Canada and inference never routed to providers in the United States. The single biggest difference is routing: a Bedrock call from Canada to a current frontier model is served through a cross-Region inference profile that can land in the US, while Augure's Canada-only mode fails closed. Privacy officers, cloud architects and developers should read this before choosing.

## At a glance

| | Augure | Amazon Bedrock in Canada (Central) |
|---|---|---|
| Company and jurisdiction | Canadian company, no US parent or investors. | Amazon Web Services, under the AWS shared responsibility model and AWS Service Terms. |
| Where customer data is stored | Canada. | Customer content is encrypted and stored at rest in the AWS Region where you use Bedrock, per the AWS FAQ. Retained abuse-detection data is stored in the destination Region that processed the request. |
| Where inference runs | Canadian infrastructure (Ontario) and vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention; never US providers. | In-Region models run in ca-central-1. Geo profiles called from ca-central-1 route to ca-central-1, us-east-1, us-east-2 or us-west-2. Global profiles route to any commercial Region. |
| Your data used for training | Never. | Not used to train models and not shared with model providers, per AWS. |
| Canadian residency option | Storage always in Canada. Accounts can be set Canada-only: requests then stay in Canada or fail with `503 residency_unavailable`, never served elsewhere. tofino-3 and the Augure Open models never leave Canada. | In-Region invocation only. As of October 2026 no Canada-only geographic profile is published; SCPs can deny destination Regions, which makes cross-Region calls fail. |
| Prompt retention | Prompts never logged by Augure. | Mode-dependent: `none`, `default` or `aws_review`. Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 require `aws_review` with retention up to 30 days. |
| API | OpenAI-compatible, https://api.augureai.ca/v1 | Converse, InvokeModel and Messages APIs over `bedrock-runtime.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com`; AWS credentials or Bedrock API keys. |
| Models | ossington-5 (256K), rosedale-1 (up to 1M), tofino-3, Augure Open (GLM-5.3, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next) | Claude 4.x and 5.x, GPT-5.6 and GPT-6, Nova, Llama, Mistral, Cohere, DeepSeek, Qwen and more; Canadian In-Region list is short (see below). |
| Context and output | 256K input (rosedale-1 up to 1M); 32,768 output tokens (tofino-3: 16,384). | Claude Fable 5.1 and Sonnet 5.5: 1M context, 128K output, per their model cards. |
| Tools, images, PDFs | Function calling, streaming, image and PDF input, `response_format` json_schema. | Converse supports tool use and streaming; image input on Claude models; structured outputs. |
| Network | TLS bearer keys. | VPC interface endpoints with AWS PrivateLink keep traffic off the public internet. |
| Languages | English and Quebec French natively. | Model-dependent; Quebec French not addressed on the AWS pages checked for this comparison. |
| Billing currency | CAD. | Dollar figures on the AWS pricing page; third-party models billed through AWS Marketplace. |
| Best fit | Canadian organisations that need Canadian operation and jurisdiction without a cloud estate. | AWS-native teams that want many model providers behind one IAM boundary. |

## Where Amazon Bedrock wins

- Model choice. AWS lists Claude Haiku, Sonnet, Opus, Fable and Mythos 5.x, GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 families, Nova, Llama, Mistral, Cohere, DeepSeek, Qwen, Grok and Kimi on one service with one bill.
- Frontier limits. Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 accept 1M-token contexts with 128K output tokens and image input, per their Bedrock model cards.
- AWS integration. IAM, Service Control Policies, CloudTrail logging of the `inferenceRegion` per request, VPC endpoints through PrivateLink, Guardrails, Knowledge Bases and Agents are all first-party.
- Explicit retention controls. The data retention API lets an account or project set `none` for zero data retention, and an SCP can forbid any other mode organisation-wide.
- Pricing options. Global cross-Region inference is priced about 10 percent below geographic routing, Flex tier is 50 percent off, Priority is 75 percent above standard, and reserved throughput is available.

## Where Augure wins

- Canadian company and jurisdiction. Augure has no US corporate parent and no US investors. Customer conversations, documents and AI inference are never handled by US-jurisdiction providers, so the CLOUD Act's reach over US-controlled providers does not extend to customer content.
- Current models without US routing. Inference runs on Canadian infrastructure and with vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention agreements, never US providers. On Bedrock, the Claude 4.x and 5.x, GPT-5.6 and GPT-6, and Nova 2 Lite models in ca-central-1 are cross-Region only.
- Fail-closed residency. A Canada-only Augure account returns `503 residency_unavailable` rather than serving elsewhere, and every response reports `inference_region`.
- No prompt logging and no retention modes to configure. Prompts are never logged by Augure and never used for training.
- Quebec French and CAD. Models are built for Canadian law and Quebec regulatory context. ossington-5 is C$1.50 input and C$3.00 output per million tokens; rosedale-1 is C$2.50 and C$6.00; tofino-3 is C$0.60 and C$2.00. Keys are self-serve with no AWS account, IAM policy or Region opt-in.

## Switch from Amazon Bedrock to Augure

1. Create a key at https://augureai.ca/developers. Keys look like `aug_sk_live_...` and are shown once.
2. Change the client. Replace the `bedrock-runtime` client with any OpenAI-compatible SDK pointed at `https://api.augureai.ca/v1` and `Authorization: Bearer <key>`.
3. Map model ids. Bedrock model ids and inference profile ids become Augure model ids.

| Bedrock model (profile id) | Augure model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet or Opus 5.x, GPT-6 family | `ossington-5` | Reasoning tier, 256K context, fastest of Augure's reasoning models. |
| Claude Fable 5.1 in agent loops or long documents | `rosedale-1` | Up to 1M context and Augure's recommended model for tool calling. |
| Claude Haiku 5.5, Nova Lite, Nova 2 Lite | `tofino-3` | Fast tier, thinking off, served in Canada with no failover outside Canada. |
| Llama 3, Mistral Large, Mixtral (open weights) | `open-glm-5-3` or `open-qwen-3.8-flash-next` | Augure Open serves open-weight models in Canada, messages reach the model as sent. |
| Unsure | `auto` | The gateway picks per request. |

4. Before and after in Python.

```python
import os
# Before: Amazon Bedrock (boto3, Converse API)
import boto3
client = boto3.client("bedrock-runtime", region_name="ca-central-1")
resp = client.converse(
    modelId="us.anthropic.claude-sonnet-5-5",  # Geo profile: may route to US Regions
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": [{"text": "Summarise this contract in two lines."}]}],
    inferenceConfig={"maxTokens": 512, "temperature": 0.2},
)
print(resp["output"]["message"]["content"][0]["text"])
# After: Augure
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.augureai.ca/v1", api_key=os.environ["AUGURE_API_KEY"])
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="ossington-5",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this contract in two lines."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)
print(resp.model_extra["_augure"]["inference_region"])
```

5. Re-check these settings.
   - Message shape: Bedrock content is a list of blocks; Augure takes a string or an array of `text`, `image_url` and `file` parts. System prompts move from the `system` list to a `system` role message.
   - `max_tokens`: Bedrock's `maxTokens` becomes `max_tokens`, capped at 32,768 (tofino-3: 16,384). Omit it on reasoning models.
   - `reasoning_effort`: `none` turns thinking off on ossington-5; rosedale-1 serves `none` as `low`. Claude's adaptive thinking settings have no direct equivalent.
   - `response_format`: json_object and json_schema are supported; validate and retry once on reasoning models, and do not combine with `tools` there.
   - Tool calling: Bedrock `toolConfig` becomes the OpenAI `tools` array with `tool_choice`; results return as `role: "tool"` messages. Pin `rosedale-1` for agent loops.
   - Streaming: `ConverseStream` events become Server-Sent Events with `stream: true`; add `stream_options: {"include_usage": true}` for a usage chunk.
   - PrivateLink, Guardrails, Knowledge Bases and Agents do not carry over; Augure offers PDF and image input, link reading and a separate `/v1/search` endpoint instead.
6. Run both for a week. Compare answers on real traffic, log `_augure.request_id`, then cut over by changing the client and the environment variables.

## Keep Amazon Bedrock if

- You need a specific third-party model such as Claude Fable 5.1 or GPT-6, or 128K output tokens.
- Your controls are built on IAM, SCPs, CloudTrail and PrivateLink, and your auditors expect them.
- Your workloads only use models that are In-Region in ca-central-1, such as Llama 3, Mistral Large, Claude 3 Haiku and the embedding models, and that list is enough.
- You are consolidating many model providers and Guardrails, Knowledge Bases or Agents on one AWS bill.
