title: "Augure vs ChatGPT: where your data goes"
description: "For Canadian teams weighing ChatGPT Business or Enterprise against Augure: storage, inference location, training and price, plus a chat and API migration guide."
competitor: "ChatGPT Team and Enterprise"
vendor: "OpenAI"
category: "chat"
canonical: "https://augureai.ca/compare/chatgpt"
updated: "2026-10-27"
summary: "ChatGPT Enterprise can store a Canadian workspace's data in Canada but, per OpenAI's published documentation, runs inference in the US by default; Augure stores customer data in Canada, never routes inference to US providers, and offers an OpenAI-compatible API so existing code moves with a base URL change."
faqs:
  - q: "Is there a Canadian alternative to ChatGPT Enterprise?"
    a: "Augure is a Canadian company with no US parent or investors. Customer data is stored in Canada, inference runs on Canadian infrastructure and with vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention agreements, and it is never routed to providers in the United States. Plans are billed in CAD: Free C$0, Pro C$20 per month, Max C$80 per month, Enterprise custom."
  - q: "Does ChatGPT keep my data in Canada?"
    a: "Per OpenAI's documentation as of October 2026, Enterprise, Edu and API customers can choose Canada as a data-at-rest region for new workspaces or projects. In-region processing is published only for the US, Europe and the UAE, so a Canadian workspace's prompts are still processed outside Canada. Augure's Canada-only account setting keeps requests in Canada or fails them with 503 residency_unavailable."
  - q: "Can I keep using the OpenAI SDK if I move to Augure?"
    a: "Yes. Augure's API is OpenAI-compatible at https://api.augureai.ca/v1. Change base_url, the API key and the model id. The alias gpt-4o-mini is accepted and served by tofino-3, and gpt-4o by ossington-4, so a first test needs no model change at all."

# Augure vs ChatGPT: where your data goes

ChatGPT Business and Enterprise are OpenAI's workspace products for organisations, with the OpenAI API alongside for developers. Augure is a sovereign AI platform for Canadian organisations: chat, knowledge base and an OpenAI-compatible API, with customer data stored in Canada. The single biggest difference is where prompts are processed. OpenAI publishes Canadian storage for Enterprise and API customers, but in-region inference only for the US, Europe and the UAE. Read this if you are a privacy officer, CTO or developer deciding whether a Canadian residency commitment is worth leaving the OpenAI ecosystem for.

## At a glance

| | Augure | ChatGPT Business and Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Company and jurisdiction | Canadian company, no US parent or investors. | OpenAI, a US company. |
| Where customer data is stored | Canada. | Per OpenAI's documentation (October 2026), Enterprise, Edu and API customers can pick one of ten data-at-rest regions, including Canada, for new workspaces or projects. |
| Where inference runs | Canadian infrastructure (Ontario) and vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention; never US providers. | Inference defaults to the US. In-region processing is published for the US, Europe and the UAE only; for Canada, OpenAI's API docs say regional processing is not supported. |
| Your data used for training | Never. | Not for Enterprise business data, company knowledge data or API data, per OpenAI's published statements. |
| Canadian residency option | Storage always in Canada. Accounts can be set Canada-only: requests then stay in Canada or fail with `503 residency_unavailable`, never served elsewhere. tofino-3 and the Augure Open models never leave Canada. | Canada is a storage region. Non-US regions require approval for abuse-monitoring controls and a modified retention amendment. Data-residency endpoints carry a 10% price uplift. |
| API | OpenAI-compatible, https://api.augureai.ca/v1 | OpenAI API, with `ca.api.openai.com` for Canadian storage. |
| Models | ossington-5 (256K), rosedale-1 (up to 1M), tofino-3, Augure Open (GLM-5.3, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next) | GPT-6 family (1.05M context, 128K output), GPT-5.x, GPT-4.1, GPT-4o families. |
| Languages | English and Quebec French natively. | Multilingual; no published statement on Quebec French. |
| Billing currency | CAD. | Business seats $25 monthly or $20 annual (shown in $, currency not labelled); Enterprise price not published. |
| Certifications published | SOC 2 and ISO 27001 in progress (readiness underway with Vanta, per https://augureai.ca/security). TLS 1.3 in transit, AES-256 at rest. | SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, 27017, 27018, 27701 and others on OpenAI's trust portal. |
| Workplace connectors | Desktop app with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace integration. | Company knowledge connectors for Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, Teams and Outlook on Business, Enterprise and Edu. |
| Best fit | Canadian organisations where data jurisdiction decides the purchase. | Organisations that want the widest model and connector ecosystem and can accept US processing. |

## Where ChatGPT wins

- Model breadth and limits. OpenAI's current GPT-6 models publish a 1.05M-token context and 128K output tokens. Augure's largest window is rosedale-1 at 1M, and output is capped at 32,768 tokens.
- Ecosystem. Company knowledge connects ChatGPT to Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, Teams and Outlook on Business, Enterprise and Edu. Augure's integrations are narrower.
- Published certifications. OpenAI's trust portal lists SOC 2 Type 2 for the API, Enterprise, Edu and Team, plus ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and related ISO reports. If your procurement checklist starts with those documents, OpenAI has them ready.
- API price at the low end. gpt-6-luna is published at US$0.10 input and US$0.50 output per 1M tokens, and gpt-4o-mini at US$0.15 and US$0.60. Augure's cheapest tier, tofino-3, is C$0.60 and C$2.00.
- Zero data retention and regional processing in the US, Europe and the UAE for approved API customers.

## Where Augure wins

- Inference never touches a US provider. Augure runs inference on Canadian infrastructure and with vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention agreements. OpenAI's documentation says inference defaults to the US even when storage is set to Canada.
- A hard Canada-only switch. Accounts can be set Canada-only, and a request that cannot be served in Canada fails with `503 residency_unavailable` instead of going elsewhere. Every API response carries `_augure.inference_region` so you can audit it.
- Jurisdiction, scoped to customer content. Augure has no US corporate parent and no US investors. Customer conversations, documents and AI inference are never handled by US-jurisdiction providers, so the CLOUD Act's reach over US-controlled providers does not extend to customer content. The only US processing is payment card networks and email delivery, documented in the privacy policy.
- Quebec French as a first language, not a translation layer, across chat and the models.
- CAD pricing with no exchange risk. Pro is C$20 per month and Max C$80 per month. The API bills in CAD, with a monthly spend limit you set in the dashboard.

## Switch from ChatGPT to Augure

### Chat path (Business or Enterprise)

1. Export what you need from ChatGPT. OpenAI documents workspace export in its help centre; confirm the current steps with your workspace owner.
2. Create an Augure account at https://chat.augureai.ca. Free gives you ossington-5 with a daily limit; Pro removes message limits.
3. What carries over: documents you re-upload (Pro allows 100 chat document uploads a month, Max unlimited), projects you recreate, and Knowledge sources (5 at a time on Free and Pro, 15 on Max).
4. What does not: chat history, custom GPTs and company knowledge connectors. You rebuild the instructions behind a GPT as an Augure project. There is no importer for Slack or SharePoint connectors.
5. For SSO, dedicated support and custom compliance documentation, write to enterprise@augureai.ca for an Enterprise agreement.
6. Run both for two weeks with one team. Compare the answers on your own documents, in both languages, before you cut the OpenAI seats.

### API path

1. Create a key at https://augureai.ca/developers (self-serve, billed monthly in CAD).
2. Change `base_url` and `api_key`. The OpenAI SDK reads `OPENAI_BASE_URL` and `OPENAI_API_KEY`, so an environment change is enough for many services.
3. Map model names.

| OpenAI model | Augure model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| `gpt-6-astra`, `gpt-5.5` | `ossington-5` | Flagship reasoning and code, 256K context, `reasoning_effort` supported. |
| `gpt-6.1-sol` on long inputs | `rosedale-1` | Up to 1M context, tool calling and agent loops. |
| `gpt-6.1-terra`, `gpt-6-luna` | `tofino-3` | Fast, no thinking, C$0.60 / C$2.00 per 1M. |
| `gpt-4o-mini`, `gpt-3.5-turbo` | `tofino-3` | Accepted as aliases; no code change needed. |
| `gpt-4o`, `gpt-4` | `ossington-4` | Accepted as aliases. |

4. Before and after in Python:

```python
# Before: OpenAI
import os
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(api_key=os.environ["OPENAI_API_KEY"])
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="gpt-4o-mini",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this contract in two lines."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)
# After: Augure
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.augureai.ca/v1", api_key=os.environ["AUGURE_API_KEY"])
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="ossington-5",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this contract in two lines."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)
print(resp.model_extra["_augure"]["inference_region"])
```

5. Re-check: output caps are 32,768 tokens on every model except tofino-3 (16,384). Omit `max_tokens` on reasoning models, or send `reasoning_effort: "none"` on ossington-5 for mechanical tasks. `response_format` json_schema is enforced by prompt on reasoning models, so validate and retry once. Tools and streaming use the standard OpenAI shapes.
6. Run both providers in parallel for a week, log `_augure.inference_region` and `finish_reason`, then cut over.

## Keep ChatGPT if

- Your workflows depend on company knowledge connectors or custom GPTs that have no Augure equivalent.
- You need 128K output tokens or a 1.05M context in a single call.
- Your buyers require US, EU or UAE in-region processing with OpenAI's published certifications, and Canadian processing is not a requirement.
- Your per-token budget at the low end matters more than residency.
