The CLOUD Act problem, explained
The US Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data (CLOUD) Act, passed in 2018, requires US companies to provide data to US authorities upon request — even if that data is stored on servers outside the United States. This means AWS Canada, Azure Canada, Google Cloud Canada are all subject to US law. Using these services for sensitive Canadian data creates a jurisdictional gap that no amount of encryption or contractual clauses can close.
