Augure vs Mistral: EU open weights versus Canadian jurisdiction
Mistral is a Paris company selling open-weight models, an API (La Plateforme) and a chat app (Le Chat) under EU jurisdiction; Augure is a Canadian company that stores customer data in Canada, runs inference on Canadian infrastructure and vetted EU partners, never US providers, and prices in CAD.

Mistral AI, founded in Paris in April 2023, sells open-weight and commercial models through La Plateforme, a chat product called Le Chat, and self-hosting paths. Augure is a Canadian platform for regulated organisations: chat apps, document tools and an OpenAI-compatible API, with inference it runs itself. The biggest difference is which country's law and infrastructure sit under your requests. Mistral is the stronger answer for an EU buyer or for anyone who wants weights to run on their own hardware. Augure is the answer when Canadian storage, a Canadian inference tier and Quebec French decide the purchase. Read this if you build on Mistral from Canada or are weighing Le Chat for a Canadian team.
At a glance
| Augure | Mistral | |
|---|---|---|
| Company and jurisdiction | Canadian company, no US parent or investors. | French company headquartered in Paris, founded 2023; €3 billion Series D at a post-money valuation above €21 billion, led by Samsung Electronics, announced September 8, 2026. |
| Where customer data is stored | Canada. | Not named in the commercial terms (September 25, 2026) or the DPA (July 27, 2026) we checked; both refer to the Trust Center for sub-processors. |
| Where inference runs | Canadian infrastructure (Ontario) and vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention; never US providers. | Mistral describes Mistral Compute as an AI infrastructure undertaking in Europe (June 2025); the Mistral Large 4 announcement says the model is available across multiple regions worldwide. Self-hosted and cloud-marketplace paths run where you put them. |
| Your data used for training | Never. | Default no, with exceptions: products set to opt-in by default where you have not opted out, feedback, and Labs or Preview models, per the commercial terms. |
| Canadian residency option | Storage always in Canada. Accounts can be set Canada-only: requests then stay in Canada or fail with 503 residency_unavailable, never served elsewhere. tofino-3 and the Augure Open models never leave Canada. |
Self-deploy open weights on your own Canadian hardware with vLLM, TensorRT-LLM or TGI; no Canadian region is documented for La Plateforme. |
| Open weights | Augure Open serves GLM-5.3 and Qwen3.8-Flash-Next under their published names, hosted in Canada; Augure's own models are not open. | Mistral Small 4, Mistral Large 3 and Ministral 3 under Apache 2.0; Mistral Medium 3.5 under a modified MIT licence; Mistral Large 4 weights promised by end of October 2026. |
| API | OpenAI-compatible, https://api.augureai.ca/v1 | La Plateforme with the mistralai SDK; self-hosted vLLM exposes an OpenAI-compatible API. |
| Models | ossington-5 (256K), rosedale-1 (up to 1M), tofino-3, Augure Open (GLM-5.3, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next) | Mistral Large 4 (preview, 1 trillion parameters, 52 billion active), Mistral Medium 3.5, Mistral Small 4, Ministral 3, Codestral, OCR, Voxtral; also serves Z.ai GLM 5.3 (1M context) |
| Images and PDFs as input | Images and PDFs on the API; OCR priced per page. | Large 4 is natively multimodal; OCR models priced per 1,000 pages. |
| Languages | English and Quebec French natively. | French company; no Quebec French claim published. |
| Certifications | SOC 2 and ISO 27001 in progress (readiness underway with Vanta, per https://augureai.ca/security). TLS 1.3 in transit, AES-256 at rest. | Help centre (August 12, 2026): complies with SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001/27701; reports on request via the Trust Center. |
| Billing currency | CAD. | USD shown on the pricing page with a EUR toggle; Le Chat Pro US$14.99 per month, Team US$24.99 per user per month, Enterprise custom. |
| Best fit | Canadian organisations where jurisdiction and Quebec French matter, with nothing to provision. | EU organisations, and teams that want to run weights themselves or pay the lowest per-token rates. |
Where Mistral wins
- Open weights. Mistral Small 4, Large 3 and Ministral 3 ship under Apache 2.0, and Mistral's docs recommend vLLM for on-premise self-deployment. You can run them on your own metal in any country, with no vendor in the request path.
- EU jurisdiction for EU buyers. A Paris headquarters, EU commercial terms, a DPA built on the EU adequacy and SCC framework, and a stated plan for European compute.
- Price. Mistral Large 4 lists at US$1.36 input and US$4.18 output per 1M tokens, and the pricing page quotes Mistral Large at US$0.50 and US$1.50. Batch processing halves prices and cached input cuts input cost by up to 90 percent, per its pricing page. Augure's ossington-5 is C$1.50 and C$3.00.
- Scale and funding. A €3 billion Series D in September 2026 and a target of 200 MW of European capacity by end-2027, as reported by Blocks & Files in May 2026.
- Model breadth. OCR, speech (Voxtral), code (Codestral), embeddings and moderation models, plus Le Chat with 100 or more connectors on the free plan.
Where Augure wins
- Canadian storage and jurisdiction. Customer data is stored in Canada. Augure is a Canadian company with no US parent and no US investors. Customer conversations, documents and AI inference are never handled by US-jurisdiction providers, so the CLOUD Act's reach over US-controlled providers does not extend to customer content. Limited US processing exists for payment card networks and email delivery only, documented in the privacy policy.
- Canadian inference tiers. Inference runs on Canadian infrastructure and with vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention agreements, never routed to providers in the United States. rosedale-1 runs on Canadian inference in Ontario. tofino-3 and Augure Open never leave Canada. Canada-only accounts fail closed, and every response names its
inference_region. - No training, on every plan, including Free. Mistral's default is no training on commercial Customer Data, with opt-in-by-default products, feedback and Preview models as exceptions you have to manage.
- Quebec French, natively, with Canadian law and Quebec regulatory context built into the models and the Legal product.
- CAD prices and a finished product. Free C$0, Pro C$20, Max C$80 per month, Enterprise custom with SSO. API: ossington-5 C$1.50 and C$3.00 per 1M tokens, rosedale-1 C$2.50 and C$6.00, tofino-3 C$0.60 and C$2.00.

| Mistral model | Augure model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| mistral-large-latest (Mistral Large 4) | ossington-5 | Flagship reasoning, code, structured output, 256K context. Use rosedale-1 for up to 1M context and agent loops. |
| Mistral Medium 3.5 | ossington-5 | Mid-tier reasoning maps to the flagship; reasoning_effort: "none" when you want speed. |
| Mistral Small 4, Ministral 3 | tofino-3 | Light tier, thinking always off, served in Canada, 16,384 output cap. |
| Z.ai GLM 5.3 on Mistral | open-glm-5-3 | Same published open weights, hosted in Canada under Augure Open (preview, developer keys only). |
| Codestral | ossington-5 | Code is a stated strength; no separate code model. |
| OCR, Voxtral, embeddings | PDFs and images as file and image_url parts; augure_ocr; no speech or embedding endpoint |
Keep Voxtral and embeddings on Mistral or another provider. |

- Re-check. Output caps: 32,768 tokens on every model except tofino-3 (16,384); omit
max_tokenson reasoning models, and set at least 1,024 on Augure Open. Reasoning comes back inreasoning_content;reasoning_effort: "none"turns it off on ossington-5.response_formatjson_schema is prompt-enforced on reasoning models, so validate and retry once; on Augure Open it goes to the model's own structured decoding. Tools use the OpenAI schema; pin rosedale-1 for agent loops. Streaming is Server-Sent Events with errors delivered inside the stream. Augure Open is text only and Canada only, with503or429instead of failover. - Run both for a week on the same traffic, compare
usageand quality, then cut over.
Le Chat users
Create an account or team at https://chat.augureai.ca. Re-upload documents and recreate projects; chat history, Le Chat connectors and Mistral agents do not carry over. For SSO and Enterprise, email enterprise@augureai.ca. Run both for two weeks with a pilot group before you switch.
Keep Mistral if
- You are an EU organisation and EU jurisdiction is the requirement.
- You want Apache 2.0 weights to run on your own hardware, in Canada or anywhere else.
- You need speech, OCR at Mistral's scale, embeddings or moderation from one vendor.
- Per-token price is the deciding factor and your data policy allows a non-Canadian provider.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Mistral a good choice for Canadian data residency?
- Mistral is headquartered in Paris and its commercial terms are EU documents, which suits EU buyers. Its terms and DPA we checked on 2026-10-27 do not name a hosting country, and its Mistral Large 4 announcement says the model is available across multiple regions worldwide. Augure stores customer data in Canada, offers Canada-only accounts, and runs tofino-3 and Augure Open only in Canada.
- Does Mistral train on my data?
- Per its commercial terms effective September 25, 2026, Mistral does not train on Customer Data except on products set to opt-in by default where you have not opted out, on feedback, and on Labs or Preview models. Its help centre says Vibe trains by default unless you opt out and pay-as-you-go API customers can opt out at any time. Augure never uses customer data to train models.
- How hard is it to move from the mistralai SDK to Augure?
- Small. Mistral's chat.complete call and response shape already resemble the OpenAI format, so you swap the mistralai client for the openai package, set base_url to https://api.augureai.ca/v1, and change the model id. Tools, streaming, response_format, images and PDFs are supported on Augure.
