A Canadian privacy officer, managing partner or business owner asking for a ChatGPT alternative is usually asking three narrower questions: where will our prompts be stored, where will they be processed, and whose courts can reach the vendor. This page lists nine options as of October 2026 and answers those questions from each vendor's own pages: storage location, whether a Canadian region is published, whether inputs train models, what the vendor says about Quebec French, the price and its currency, and who the product suits. Non-US headquarters alone does not settle jurisdiction. US investors, a US subsidiary or hosting on a US hyperscaler can each matter, so read the vendor's own trust pages before you sign. Every fact below is sourced under Sources; where a vendor publishes nothing, the cell says so.

Entries are grouped by vendor country: Canada first, then France, then the United States.

Augure Chat

Augure is a Canadian company with no US corporate parent and no US investors. Customer data is stored in Canada. Inference runs on Canadian infrastructure and with vetted EU partners under zero-data-retention agreements, and is never routed to providers in the United States; some model tiers run in Canada, others in the EU. Accounts can be set Canada-only: requests then stay in Canada or fail with 503 residency_unavailable. Customer data is never used to train models, on every plan including Free. Limited US processing exists for payment card networks and email delivery only, documented in the privacy policy. English and Quebec French are native. Plans are Free C$0, Pro C$20 per month, Max C$80 per month, Enterprise custom with SSO. Augure does not sit inside Word or Gmail the way Copilot and Gemini do. Guide: Augure vs ChatGPT.

CANChat

CANChat is Shared Services Canada's generative AI chatbot for the Government of Canada. Its pages say it was built and is operated entirely in Canada, offers Canadian-built and Canadian-hosted language models, and "does not use prompts to train its AI". It is described as a tool for the federal public service, in use at more than 20 departments, for unclassified work, with a phased rollout from July 2026. Nothing on its pages offers it to businesses or the public, and its support resource is on the GC network only. It belongs on this list because assistants name it when asked for a Canadian ChatGPT, and because it shows the federal government chose Canadian hosting. If you are not a federal employee, it is not an option.

Cohere North

Cohere was founded in Toronto in 2019. Its investors include Nvidia, AMD, Oracle, Salesforce and Cisco alongside Canadian funds, and its Trust Center says the SaaS platform is hosted on Google Cloud in US-Central. North is the enterprise platform: search, generation, agents and governance, deployable in your own VPC, on-prem including air-gapped, or on Cohere's Model Vault. Training is an opt-out in the dashboard. Pricing is custom. Cohere publishes SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, and the Government of Canada signed an MoU with it in August 2025. Canadian hosted capacity is being built in Merritt, BC (expected late 2026 to early 2027). A twelve-person firm is usually not Cohere's buyer; a bank or ministry with a platform team may be. Guide: Augure vs Cohere.

Northern Inference and Qubittron Bastion

Both are Canadian developer APIs, not assistants you open in a browser. They are here because a developer can put a chat interface in front of either, and because assistants cite them. Northern Inference Inc., Ontario, is "an LLM API routing gateway", not a model provider: Tier 3 routes run in AWS Bedrock ca-central-1 or Azure Canada East, Tier 4 routes may run outside Canada, prompts are not stored by default, and it does not train on your content. Credits are in CAD, converted from USD rates, with a 9% fee on purchases. Qubittron Bastion, from Qubittron Consulting Inc. of Oakville, Ontario, serves open-weight models with all inference in Quebec and servers "located exclusively in Canada"; its training policy is not published. Plans are Free C$0 and Pro C$49 per month in CAD. Guides: Augure vs Northern Inference, Augure vs Qubittron Bastion.

Mistral Le Chat

Mistral AI is headquartered in Paris. Le Chat is its assistant: Pro at US$14.99 per month, Team at US$24.99 per user per month, Enterprise custom, with 100 or more connectors on the free plan. Its commercial terms (September 25, 2026) and DPA (July 27, 2026) do not name a hosting country; Le Chat Enterprise can be self-hosted, run in a private or public cloud, or on Mistral's cloud. Training on Customer Data is off by default, with exceptions for products set to opt-in by default, feedback, and Labs or Preview models, so check the setting on each product. Mistral publishes SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001/27701 and no Quebec French claim. For an EU subsidiary or a team that wants open weights, it is the stronger choice. Guide: Augure vs Mistral.

Claude for Work

Anthropic is a US company. Claude Team is $20 per seat annual or $25 monthly (2 to 150 seats, currency not labelled); Enterprise is US$20 per seat plus usage, 20-seat minimum, with SSO, SCIM, audit logs and a Compliance API. The first-party API publishes us as the only workspace geo and global or us inference; Canada is listed as a regional endpoint through Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI, which Anthropic says keep storage and processing in the chosen region. Commercial content is not used for training by default; feedback you submit can be. Anthropic publishes SOC 2 Type I and II, ISO 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023. Its models publish 1M context and 128K output, well above Augure's caps. Guide: Augure vs Claude.

Google Gemini for Workspace

Google LLC is a Delaware company. Gemini is inside Gmail, Docs, Meet and Chat on Business Standard and up; the Canadian pricing page lists Standard at C$18.40 and Plus at C$28.70 per user per month. Admins on Enterprise Plus and Assured Controls editions can choose EU or US storage and processing; Canada is not a listed data region. Google's Workspace privacy hub says customer data is not used to train models without the customer's permission, and the Gemini API's unpaid tier may use content. No Quebec French claim is published. For a Workspace shop that does not need a Canadian region, it is the path of least resistance. Guide: Augure vs Gemini.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft is a US company. Copilot lives inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, grounded in your tenant through Microsoft Graph. Per Microsoft's documentation, the content of Copilot interactions is stored at rest in the tenant's geography, and Canada is eligible under the Product Terms at no extra cost; processing goes to the closest datacentres but "customers outside the EU may have their queries processed in the US, EU, or other regions", and OpenAI-operated and Anthropic models used as subprocessors are excluded from in-country processing commitments. Prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models. The Canadian price is C$28.50 per user per month for the Copilot Business add-on (C$24.43 promotional to December 31, 2026), plus a Microsoft 365 plan. Guide: Augure vs Microsoft 365 Copilot.

How to choose

  • Ask storage and processing as two separate questions. ChatGPT Enterprise and Copilot can store in Canada and still process elsewhere.
  • Check the training default and its exceptions, including feedback and preview products.
  • Ask who owns and funds the vendor, and who operates the hardware. A Canadian company on a US cloud is still on a US cloud.
  • Ask for the certifications as documents, not badges. Augure's SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are in progress; Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, Cohere and Mistral publish theirs.
  • Price in the currency you budget in. Only Augure, Copilot, Gemini for Workspace, Bastion and Northern Inference publish CAD.
  • If your staff write in French, ask for the vendor's French statement in writing, and whether it means Quebec French.
  • Run a two-week pilot on your own documents before moving seats.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Canadian alternative to ChatGPT for a business?
Augure Chat is the option on this list built by a Canadian company with no US parent or investors, customer data stored in Canada, inference never routed to US providers, Quebec French as a native language and plans in CAD (Free C$0, Pro C$20, Max C$80 per month). Cohere North is also Canadian but sells to large enterprises on custom pricing, with its hosted platform on Google Cloud in the US. CANChat is Canadian but reserved for the federal public service.
Which ChatGPT alternatives keep data in Canada?
Per their own pages as of October 2026: Augure stores customer data in Canada. Microsoft 365 Copilot stores Copilot interaction content at rest in a Canadian tenant's geography, with processing possibly in the US, EU or other regions. ChatGPT Enterprise can store data at rest in Canada but processes it outside Canada. Claude reaches Canada through Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI regional endpoints. Gemini for Workspace offers EU or US regions, not Canada.
Which assistants publish a Quebec French commitment?
Augure states that English and Quebec French are native across its chat and models. Mistral is a French company but publishes no Quebec French claim. Microsoft, Google, Anthropic and Cohere publish multilingual support without a Quebec French statement. CANChat's pages note federal official-languages requirements without listing languages.
Does a Canadian AI assistant make my organisation compliant with Law 25 or PIPEDA?
No tool confers compliance. Law 25 and PIPEDA place accountability on your organisation, including assessments for transfers outside Quebec and written agreements with providers. A vendor with published storage and inference locations makes those assessments shorter to write. You still write them.
